The End of an Era: Warren Buffett stepping down
Warren Buffett announced at the Berkshire Hathaway AGM this weekend that he will be stepping down at the end of the year, which was a surprise announcement for the crowd and directors of Berkshire. What a journey. What a track record.
The one thing we would like to add is that Canadian Value Investors (pre-Substack) was born out of a pilgrimage to the AGM in Omaha now about a decade ago. In fact, we went a few times to the Woodstock for Capitalists. A lot of peanut brittle was eaten. We met a lot of great people over the years and learned a lot too. There was always a shareholder video that was to never be shown to the general public. Our favourite was the Breaking Bad year. While the full shareholder video has never been provided publicly, a small clip of it has been released. See Appendix: Brittle Bitches. It led us to a bizarre fact we did not expect; Buffett is a huge Breaking Bad fan.
The era of Buffett and the Berkshire AGM comes to an end and now we must continue on.

Our show favourite - KITS

Our show favourite is our little eyewear company that is quickly becoming not so little. To be clear, out of all of our holdings, KITS is by far the least “value”-oriented holding. However, the core thesis remains that they are 1) under-earning (adjusting margins and marketing spend to breakeven cashflow while maximizing growth) and 2) the runway is extremely long.
They are very good marketers with targeted region-specific plans. Just check a live example they have for the Calgary market right now below (yeeeehaw).

Dates for the biggest Canadian value-oriented investing conferences have been released and you get your choice of an east coast or west coast option (or why not both?). Planet MicroCap Canadian-edition is confirmed for this October in Toronto while Small Cap Discoveries is set for September in Vancouver. We are looking forward to them.
