Berkshire Hathaway AGM 2019 Complete Weekend Guide - By Canadian Value Investors

The Woodstock of capitalism is a curious place. 45,000+ people gather around a convention center in Omaha, Nebraska, to watch two men eat peanut brittle and talk about business. But it’s because Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger have worked together since 1965 to turn a failing textile business into a $500 billion market cap conglomerate, while telling jokes and writing insightful letters along the way.

Here’s our guide for the 2019 AGM! We’ve been before and it’s a blast (your mileage may vary depending on your hobbies). There’s not just the Saturday morning AGM but a whole little ecosystem has grown out of this thing.

But first – If you can’t make it in person at least you can still watch the main event

Starting in 2016, the main shareholder event has been livestreamed by Yahoo. No charge, no funny business. They do a good job. The May 4 live stream will be found here -

Here’s the 2018 video -

Weekend Options

Friday May 3

1) BRK Exhibition Hall with all the companies: Friday 12-5pm

CEO networking! It might be worth going to this instead of fighting through people on Saturday. Especially if you actually read in detail about some of their subsidiary businesses (ie, have some semi-intelligent questions to ask). There is also discount shopping at the exhibits.

2) 16th Annual Value Investor Conference - Omaha

One of the pricier events we have come across…. It looks like an interesting panel of speakers (and actually starts on Thursday) but we have not yet had the pleasure of attending this. -

3) Creighton University Value Investing panel: Friday 3-6pm

Creighton University’s Heider College of Business and Portfolio Practicum class will once again be hosting its tenth value investing panel discussion. -

4) Berkshire Book Signing Event: Friday 1-5pm

Almost two dozen authors are getting together for this finance-focused signing event.

5) From Buffett to Graham and Beyond Dinner: Friday 6-10ish pm

This dinner is in its tenth year. Several great speakers (including one of our favorites Thomas Russo) but a bit pricey. -

6) Yellow BRKers Party: Friday 4-10pm

Years ago Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger actually attended this event. “The event is just a common time and place for Berkshire fans, supporters, and enthusiasts to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones before the official weekend.” We have attended before I had some great chats with new faces. -

Saturday May 4

The Main Event:

Saturday, May 4 Annual Meeting

Doors Open  7:00am

Company Movie 8:30am

Q&A 9:15am – 3:30pm

Business Meeting 3:45 – 4:30pm (approximation)

2) Trupanion Founder & CEO Q&A: Saturday 3:30pm after AGM

We haven’t come across this company before, but it's publicly traded so you can get info on it, and any founder that goes to the BRK AGM can't be ALL bad!

3) Nebraska Furniture Mart’s Berkshire Picnic – 5:30pm-8 – A “fun” thing (to help appease the friends and family you brought along). Nebraska Furniture Mart, 700 South 72nd Street – Another great way to spend some money. It is the second largest furniture store in the United States (the company built a bigger one in Texas..).

Sunday May 5

1) Markel Brunch: 10am-2ish?

We have attended this before. Markel Corporation is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, and investment operations where they run a pretty large value-oriented portfolio. The event is similar in style to the BRK AGM but the crowd and questions are bit more financed focused.

“Fun” things

-Berkshire Hathaway “Invest in Yourself” 5k – 8am-11 – Sign up here:

-Borsheims Shopping Day – 9am-4pm – Take out your wallet and peruse the 30,000 square foot sales floor. It’s quite the sight and potentially very expensive depending on the tastes of your family.

- Gorat’s Steakhouse  4917 Center Street – One of Warren’s favorite steak houses. You definitely need a reservation and you can get one here: 402-551-3733 starting on April 1 (but not before

-Krispy Kreme Donuts – Krispy Kreme makes delicious high-calorie circles of deliciousness but unfortunately they left our hometown a few years ago, making it a very necessary pit stop for us.
